American Indian Heritage Month

Posted by deborah on Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Last month I blended in the colors of pink on the blog in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month, earthy colors in respect for my own personal heritage, Native American Month. Perhaps it means something to some, and to others nothing at all. But since my grandmother was Full-Blood Native American I pay my respects and appreciation and sorrow of a history of traditions and art that expands the globe.

This recognition did not happen until 1990 when President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution that designated November as National American Indian Heritage Month. This month will bring about many Pow-Wows that will open across the United States. The celebrations and the competitions of great proportions that draw thousands of spectators from across the world in an effort to carry on the gift and legacy from our ancestors in song and dance.

The spirit of the American Indian that lives in the gut of our existence.
