I am certainly not one for hot spicy foods. Not that I don’t like it but for whatever reason, my gut does not. Dinner with a friend last week brought about the conversation of wasabi.
This particular friend is of Asian descent and in my opinion an authentic voice on the subject of the conversation.
She had three points to make about this plant spice called “wasabi.”
- First is the pronunciation. Say it fast she said. Drag out the wa sound and say sabi fast. Almost like saying wasubi.
- know that most wasabi ordered in a restaurant is not real. Real wasabi comes from grating the root Wasabia Japonica. Whether using the canned version or the actual root, grate fast or stir faster.
- and the most important secret of making this item hot! After mixing it, place in a small glass bowl and turn upside down on a hard surface so no air can get to it. Wait about 10 minutes (longer if you can stand the hot this exercise will produce) then turn up and use. Go ahead and take a whiff but I am warning you to approach with caution. It really does work!
Another interesting time spent with a person of authority and adding entertainment to my life.
