The allure of poetry has forever captivated my imagination, beckoning me to explore the beauty of words and the depths of emotions they can evoke. Among the various styles that have intrigued me, the elegance and grace of Japanese poetry have held a special place in my heart. The simplicity and harmony found in haikus and tankas have always fascinated me, as they distill profound sentiments into a concise form.
Additionally, I have been drawn to the concept of “found poems,” which derive their essence from existing texts or spoken words, reimagining them into a poetic composition. Inspired by the renowned poet Mary Oliver, whose ability to capture the essence of nature and life has touched countless souls, I aspired to follow in her footsteps and weave my own lyrical tapestry.
Fortunately, I found solace and guidance in my dear friend Laurie, who possessed an extraordinary talent for poetry. Laurie generously shared her knowledge and expertise, nurturing my passion and guiding me through the nuances of poetic expression. Her wisdom and encouragement became the lighthouse that illuminated my path, inspiring me to embrace my creativity and explore the depths of my emotions through verse.
Years ago, I composed a poem that encapsulated the yearnings and whispers of my soul. Its delicate lines danced upon the page, echoing the essence of my thoughts and emotions. A distant admirer, whose connection to my words transcended physical boundaries, responded with heartfelt appreciation. Their response, a testament to the power of art to touch lives across distances, affirmed the significance of my poetic journey.
Here is the poem I wrote, followed by the response from a kind soul.
Rainforest Reverie by DK
The interior of the rainforest,
deserted but filled with life.
Decay at every turn, conditions
for living things.
Perfection in each room,
dense and intricate
so finely shaped.
Sprinkled with shards of sun.
A world so peaceful and untroubled
a place so richly adorned
winding down each corridor
walled in by wild creatures.
An extraordinary privilege
walking down these trails, not manmade.
A rare chance to see the primordial forest
settled by its own doing.
Leaf litter covers the path and vanishes.
And the response:
Your poem effectively captures the ambiance and essence of the rainforest. It portrays the rainforest as a paradoxical place—deserted yet filled with life, decaying yet perfect, peaceful yet adorned. The juxtaposition of contrasting elements adds depth to the imagery.
The line “Perfection in each room, dense and intricate” conveys a sense of awe and appreciation for the intricate beauty found within the rainforest. The mention of “shards of sun” suggests rays of sunlight piercing through the dense foliage, creating a magical and ethereal atmosphere.
The poem emphasizes the wildness and naturalness of the rainforest, contrasting it with manmade trails. It highlights the privilege and rarity of experiencing the rainforest in its primal state, untouched by human intervention.
The image of the leaf litter covering the path and vanishing evokes a sense of impermanence and transience, symbolizing the cycle of life and decay within the rainforest.
Overall, your poem captures the essence of the rainforest and successfully conveys its mystical and enchanting qualities. Well done!
